Switching to an electric vehicle changes your biggest running expense, which is fuel. This calculator puts your petrol bill and your electricity bill side by side, using your own daily distance, local fuel price and home tariff, so you see a saving in rupees instead of a marketing claim.
How the calculation works
Petrol cost per km is the petrol price divided by mileage in km per litre. EV cost per km is the electricity price divided by efficiency in km per kWh. Multiply each by daily distance and days driven to get the monthly cost. The difference is your monthly saving, and multiplying it by 12 or 60 gives the yearly and five-year figures.
Worked example
A driver covers 40 km a day for 26 days. Petrol at ₹105 per litre and 15 km/l costs ₹7 per km, or ₹7,280 a month. An EV at ₹8 per kWh and 6 km/kWh costs about ₹1.33 per km, or about ₹1,387 a month. The monthly saving is roughly ₹5,893.
Frequently asked questions
Does this include servicing and insurance?
No. It covers energy cost only. EVs usually have fewer moving parts to service, but insurance, tyres and battery warranty terms differ by model.
Which efficiency number should I use?
